Online Tools To Track Ticket Price Drops And Receive Refunds

in Tools

The free online web tool Yapta lets you create detailed trip and vacation itineraries and will automatically send you an email if the price of your itinerary drops within a given period of time. It’s an excellent way to save on your travel costs, especially if you start planning ahead of time, since you can set up a Yapta alert a few months in advance and purchase your ticket when the prices hit bottom. There are predictable shifts and seasonal rises and falls of prices throughout the year but many other things can influence airline ticket prices, like unexpected delays, changing political situations, and unforeseen natural events. Yapta takes the work out of tracking these prices for you by sending you an email when things change or fall below (or above) specific ranges you can set within the programs. It’s flexible and a powerful tool that can ease your travel budget.

Yapta though is just one of the many online tools (which are free by the way) that you can use to save smart and have more money left over for the fun things when you arrive at your destination.

Use Alerts To Get Refunds

Many airlines don’t advertise it but they offer refunds if prices change within 30 days of a purchase. For many travelers these refunds aren’t very helpful for the simple fact that most people tend to book less that 30 days before their departure. You can save money and potentially cash out on a refund by starting your planning and booking early – that is more than 1 month before your departure.

Watch The Trends

rtw ticketRecently purchased by Microsoft and incorporated into their search engine, Bing, Farecast is a tool that will tell you based on an analysis or previous trends whether the tickets you want to purchase are likely to increase or decrease in price. This web tool basically tells you whether or not you should purchase your tickets now or wait a few weeks since it’s when the prices are most likely to drop based on what has happened in the past. It’s just one more digital (and free, we love free!) piece of technology that will help you refine your budget and save on the thing that usually costs most – the airfare or initial transportation costs that get you from point “A” to point “B”.

What The Experts Say

While these online tools give you specific and detailed information about given routes, times, and destinations based on previous data you may not have or make the time to use them. That said you can use a trick the experts recommend and purchase your airplane tickets at generally the best time to buy them – Wednesday nights between 11pm and 1am into Thursday the next day. That two-hour window has been shown and recommended to be a good time to purchase since it’s when airlines are right about to release new deals and need to sell the remaining seats on their hands quickly. It’s not a given and the time is certainly up for debate, but it can’t hurt to try. It’s easier to save for vacation when you don’t need to save as much. Oh, and if you’re wondering about the timezone we’re talking about, it’s 11pm-1am in the timezone of the airlines headquarters. A quick Google search or check on the airline website should reveal where exactly in the world that is. For national airlines, it’s typically in the capitol of the country, although in the United States many airlines are based out of Atlanta and a few Texas cities as well.
